Porsche adds huge new wing to Leipzig factory
Remember the chatter about the sub-Cayenne Cajun SUV earlier this year? Well, not only are Porsche actually building it, they’re spending £438,000,000 on a factory extension in preparation. To borrow from the inimitable Sid James, cor blimey.
More than 1,000 new jobs and said 17-hectare extension are going towards the baby 4×4′s production in Leipzig, where it’ll be bolted together alongside the Panamera at the end of 2013. So, what’s the Cajun got in store for us? If you read these words from a few weeks ago, you’ll know that the entry-level SUV is likely to be based on the Audi Q5 platform, and aimed at hoiking in younger customers to the brand. Porsche claims lightweight construction, dynamic handling and agility, which is a given, really.
Not much more detail than that: Porsche haven’t given us any idea on the price, but if the Q5′s anything to go by, it’ll set you back at least £30,000, and that’s without additions for the premium badge. Could you drive a car called a Cajun, topgear.comrades? Does it stand for CAyenne JUNior? Or is it, in fact, a respectful nod to the sadly-missed Walkers Cajun Squirrel crisp line?
